Case Study: “Yes on Article 13” — Securing Permanent Public Access to Long Sands Beach

In fall 2024, Broadreach PR led a high‑stakes public affairs campaign in support of Article 13, a municipal ballot measure authorizing the Town of York, Maine, to purchase a privately owned portion of Long Sands Beach and secure permanent public access. The campaign was conducted under significant constraints, including a limited budget, a short timeline, and clients with no prior political or public affairs experience.

Broadreach implemented a fact‑driven, de‑escalatory communications strategy focused on education, transparency, and trusted local voices. Tactics included campaign branding and messaging, a rapid response website, yard signage and printed collateral, media relations, and community stakeholder outreach.

The campaign succeeded: Article 13 passed with a 53.2% majority. No organized opposition emerged, media coverage shifted toward balanced and supportive framing, and the sale proceeded—securing public access to the beach while protecting the family’s reputation.
