Today, it seems we are hearing about social networking everywhere. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like have become a central part of our lives and part of how we inform our friends and colleagues what we are doing. Still, let’s take a moment to reflect on the value of social networking the old fashioned way.
Feed the soul and a rusty connection with lunch. There is something to be said about breaking bread with people you would like to strengthen a connection with. Take the time to discuss what is going on in business, but also pay attention to the personal side of life. This will give you an insight to the person and strengthen your connection with them. Building relationships is an ongoing process, and it is important to use all channels to get your story out there. Press releases are used to communicate with the traditional media, and they can be repurposed for social media, into 140 characters for Twitter, short posts for Facebook, blog posts for updates and often overlooked, personal eblasts to Centers of Influence (COIs). Every once and awhile I find little bits of things on social media outlets that I find interesting, irksome, or just cool. I’d like to note one of these things in hopes of sharing some insights and maybe bring some new perspective/attention to these neat little pieces.
Facebook Groups- Though not a bad thing for private groups of people who wish to engage and discuss a particular topic or interest, let’s just all admit that Facebook Groups are NOT interchangeable with Facebook pages and here’s why: (more…)

Saying that social media is the “hot trend” is becoming a gross understatement as business are jumping, sometimes blindly, to get on board. With the vast number of outlets to choose from, it’s no wonder that many businesses are overwhelmed by the prospect of having a functional social media strategy.

Social media is like a cocktail party. That was an intriguing metaphor discussed by Rob Landry of Pemaquid Communications, a Portland Web design studio, during a recent Maine Public Relations Council seminar.
The comparison is spot-on in all the particulars that Rob talked about – and in another couple crucial ways that didn’t come up.
The idea, of course, is that social media is not a monologue like the one that has taken place between traditional media and the public. Instead, social media is a conversation, where the most popular participants are witty, interesting and helpful.
